A venogram is a diagnostic study in which contrast dye is injected through a catheter so the deep veins can be imaged in real time. It shows exactly where a vein is narrowed, compressed, or blocked and how blood is rerouting around it.
When the venogram confirms a significant obstruction, the same procedure continues to treatment. Venoplasty uses a balloon to open the narrowed segment, and a stent is placed to hold the vein open where compression or scarring would otherwise cause it to collapse again. Because the diagnosis and the treatment happen in one session, most patients avoid a second procedure.
Procedure
Duplex ultrasound and clinical evaluation identify likely deep venous obstruction. Soris performs this imaging in our outpatient centers and reviews it with you before scheduling.
A catheter is placed through a small puncture, usually behind the knee or in the groin, using ultrasound and X-ray guidance. Contrast is injected for the venogram.
If a significant blockage is found, balloon venoplasty is performed, and a stent may be placed if needed.. The procedure typically takes 60 to 90 minutes under local anesthesia, with light sedation provided as needed.
Patients go home the same day and walk immediately. A short course of blood-thinning medication is often prescribed to keep the stent open, and follow-up ultrasound confirms flow.
