Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) catheter removal is a minor surgical procedure that extracts a peritoneal dialysis catheter from the abdominal wall and peritoneal cavity.
Your physician carefully removes the catheter and closes the site once it has been safely removed.
Removal is indicated when the catheter develops a tunnel or exit-site infection, when a malfunction cannot be corrected, or when a patient transitions away from peritoneal dialysis to hemodialysis or a kidney transplant.

Procedure

Local anesthesia numbs the catheter site. The surgeon makes a small incision along the existing tunnel tract, releases the Dacron cuff from the surrounding tissue, and withdraws the catheter.
The incision is closed with sutures and covered with a sterile dressing. The procedure typically takes 20 to 30 minutes.
Patients go home the same day. Soris Pain & Vascular Institute provides wound care instructions and schedules a follow-up visit within one week to check the incision site.
If the catheter was removed for infection, the team coordinates antibiotic therapy with your nephrologist.
