Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a catheter-based procedure that blocks the arterial blood supply feeding uterine fibroids, causing them to shrink and reducing symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pressure, and urinary frequency.
UFE has been performed since the mid-1990s and is supported by long-term outcome data.
Our physicians insert a microcatheter through a small puncture in the wrist or groin artery. Using fluoroscopic guidance, the catheter reaches the uterine arteries on each side.
Calibrated embolic particles are delivered to block the vessels feeding the fibroids. Normal uterine tissue recovers through collateral blood supply. Fibroids gradually shrink over three to six months.
The procedure takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes under conscious sedation.
