Recognizing Chronic Heel Pain
Plantar fasciitis is the degeneration and chronic inflammation of the plantar fascia, the thick band of connective tissue running from the calcaneus (heel bone) to the base of the toes, responsible for maintaining the longitudinal arch of the foot during weight-bearing activities.
Stabbing heel pain upon the first few steps after rest is the classic symptom. Pain may decrease with activity but returns after prolonged standing or walking. Tenderness concentrated at the inner side of the heel bone distinguishes plantar fasciitis from other causes of heel pain.
When Standard Treatments Fail
Rest, stretching, night splints, and custom orthotics resolve plantar fasciitis in most patients within 6 to 12 months. Soris Pain & Vascular Institute evaluates patients with persistent symptoms for plantar fasciitis embolization candidacy.
